Today's vehicle is a highly complex system incorporating a dizzying array of electronics, software and sensors required to accommodate and enable the vast range of complex, advanced functions drivers expect as 'standard' features in today's cars. 
The fact that many of these subsystems aren't developed by the vehicle manufacturer dramatically adds to this complexity since suppliers often deliver their subsystems to the OEM as a "black box" to protect their intellectual property. So how can OEMs and suppliers synchronize their efforts when each is at a different point in the development process?
